WebMar 25, 2024 · What is a bittern? Bitterns are a member of the family of birds which includes herons and egrets. There are many different species of bittern which live around the world, with the Eurasian bittern found in the UK. Though they are relatively large birds, they are quite difficult to find. Bitterns are birds belonging to the subfamily Botaurinae of the heron family Ardeidae. Bitterns tend to be shorter-necked and more secretive than other members of the family. They were called hæferblæte in Old English; the word "bittern" came to English from Old French butor, itself from Gallo-Roman butitaurus, a compound of Latin būtiō (buzzard) and taurus (bull).
